Creating and Formatting a Dashboard in Tableau
If you want to customize your data visualizations for your audience, the Tableau Public dashboard is a great option. Using the Tableau Public dashboard, you can easily resize, add, and connect more than two visualizations. We’ll show you how to create a basic dashboard using the charts we’ve made before, but you can still follow the instructions if you have your visualizations.
- To create a dashboard, click on the icon on the bottom left of the screen that looks like a window with a “+.” Then, hover over the icon, which should say “New Dashboard.”
- Before creating your dashboard, resizing your work as desired is essential. Go to the Dashboard pane, select “size,” and choose from fixed size, automatic, or range.
- You’ll see the names of the worksheets we created on the Dashboard pane. Start by clicking and dragging Sheet 1 (or the name you gave it) from the left to the center of the screen where it says, “Drop sheets here.”
- You can change the position and size of your worksheet by selecting “floating.” A floating worksheet occupies a non-exclusive area of the dashboard, meaning that separate floating worksheets may overlap. You can also change the order in which overlapping floating worksheets are stacked. To do this, select your existing tiled worksheet and click on the drop-down caret icon in the upper right of your worksheet and select floating.
- If you click on the drop-down caret icon, you can see all you can do with your visualization, such as using it as a filter, hiding the title, modifying the legends, and more.
- On the Dashboard pane, under objects, you can select and drag elements to improve your dashboard. These elements include adding text, images, space, web pages, and navigation.
- Click on Format in the menu bar, select “dashboard,” and change dashboard shading, title, worksheet titles, and more. With Tableau Public dashboard, you can create a visually appealing and engaging dashboard for your audience.

Creating and Formatting Story points in Tableau
- Story points are a powerful tool that can help you build a narrative and tell a more compelling story with your data visualizations. With Tableau Public, you have the tools to create a story with data, and we’ll guide you through the straightforward steps to create a simple narrative.
- While the basic steps are simple, keep in mind that there are many possibilities with this feature. We encourage you to explore and learn more about it through the links below.
- To create a story point, start by selecting the icon on the bottom left of the screen that looks like a window with a “+” over it. You should see the “New Story” option when you hover over the icon.
- Before creating your story point, resizing your work as desired is essential. In the Story pane, under “Size,” you can choose from fixed size, automatic, and range options.
- Next, you’ll want to add your visualizations to the story. In the Story pane, you’ll see the names of the worksheets you created. Start by clicking and dragging your visualizations next to each other from the left to the center of the screen, where it says “Add a caption.” Double-click on “Add a caption” to give a title to each caption box.
- Finally, you can change the navigation style by going to the Story pane, clicking “Layout,” and selecting the navigation style you’re interested in (such as caption boxes, numbers, dots, etc.).
