Deion Kelly – American University in Cairo, Spring 2022

As an African American student at the American University of Cairo, it taught about the importance of understanding new culture, social networks, and adds a unique perspective for my American colleagues. To start off with academics, my classes in the humanities as well as other disciplines focused on engagement and application of material in class with Egyptian society. Though it may have been a challenge at times, it provided me with an enriching experience to know about the societal interactions in old and new Cairo! For specific events at AUC, I really enjoyed the Jazz Concert Series and International Day the most! The concert series allowed for me resonate with my musical enthusiasm, and it was very therapeutic! International Day really broadened my horizons on different cultures at AUC, and I was honored to be one of the MCs for it! The opportunity gave me so much freedom to be myself. Even as a Black student from the United States, it was a bit difficult to navigate my culture in Egypt, especially at AUC. With a few friends and colleagues from classes, I strengthen my ability to stand strong in my identity and have creative change as well as cultural consciousness in others. Ultimately, being at AUC has provided an enriching opportunity for me to integrate with new cultural experiences. As a study abroad student, I am glad that I was able to make friends, learn more about Egyptian culture, and enjoyed programming from AUC!
