This photo was taken at the Free Derry Museum in Derry, Ireland. This museum illustrated Derry during The Troubles. Free Derry was a nationalist found area in Derry, which emerged during the Northern Ireland civil rights movement. This movement sought to end discrimination against the Irish Catholic/nationalist minority by the Protestant/unionist government. This area, signaled by “You are now entering Free Derry”, escalated into a resistance area until tensions hit an all time high. On January 30, 1972, best known as Bloody Sunday, thirteen unarmed men and boys were shot dead by the British Parachute Regiment during a protest. This signified the end of Free Derry as thousands of British troops occupied the area.
