Artist’s Statement
Face Value is a series of paintings which focuses on the nature of interaction and how it allows us both to understand and fail to understand others. The metaphor of the card game speaks to the process of beginning to understand another person as one interacts with them more, just as in a card game players become more familiar with their opponent’s hands as the game progresses. Games allow us to present ourselves authentically without consequence, and these paintings are intended as a reaction to that authenticity.
